Sucker Punch" is an epic action fantasy that takes us into the vivid imagination of a young girl whose dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality. Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, and her incredible adventures blur the lines between what's real and what is imaginary.
She has been locked away against her will, but Babydoll (Emily Browning) has not lost her will to survive. Determined to fight for her freedom, she urges four other young girlsâ"the outspoken Rocket (Jena Malone), the street-smart Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), the fiercely loyal Amber (Jamie Chung) and the reluctant Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish)â"to band together and try to escape their terrible fate at the hands of their captors, Blue (Oscar Isaac), Madam Gorski (Carla Gugino) and the High Roller (Jon Hamm).
Led by Babydoll, the girls engage in fantastical warfare against everything from samurais to serpents, with a virtual arsenal at their disposal. Together, they must decide what they are willing to sacrifice in order to stay alive. But with the help of a Wise Man (Scott Glenn), their unbelievable journeyâ"if they succeedâ"will set them free.
Zack Snyder has been working on Sucker Punch for six years. In 2009, he released this short synopsis:
âSet in the 1950s, it tells the story of Baby Doll (Browning), who is trying to hide from the pain caused by her evil stepfather and lobotomy. She ends up in mental institution and while there she starts to imagine alternative reality. She plans to escape from that imaginary world but to do that she needs to steal five objects before she is caught by a vile man. She has 5 days to escape before being lobotomized. In order to cope with the situation, she enters the hyper-real world of her imagination, and the lines between reality and dream begin to blur. She is joined with friends who are inmates from the institution. Lessons learned in the said fantasy world could help the girls escape their real-world fate.â

For months now weâve been bombarded with trailers for Zack Snyderâs âSucker Punch.â These trailers have been elliptical, at least from a story point of view. Visually, theyâve been somewhat staggering â quick fire clips of attractive young girls in costumes that border on high-end fetish gear, battling all sorts of mythological or supernatural elements. They dive in between robots, zip underneath monstrous samurais, and face off against towering, fire-breathing dragons.
But, like, what is it about, exactly?
The new book, ââSucker Punch: The Art of the Filmâ (written by Snyder) certainly wonât illuminate anything. It does, however, collect a whole bunch of ho-hum pre-production art, as well as a gallery of images from the finished film. The main impression you get, after reading the minimal text and glancing at the volume of sketches and photos, is that Snyder was very interested in making a really cool-looking movie. And thatâs about it.
In the introduction, Snyder says that heâs been living with the idea for âSucker Punchâ for âalmost a decade.â The idea of a group of troubled young girls who slip into a vivid fantasy world to escape the pain of their real life is something that intrigues him. âWhat begins as a fearful retreat becomes an empowering coping mechanism,â he writes. (The word âempoweringâ is the closest thing the book comes to broaching the topic of feminism. Apparently, feminism isnât as zingy or cool enough for Snyder. And subtext isnât an issue.)
Most of the drawings that accompany the early section of the book, for all his talk of âempoweringâ and âstrongâ girls, look like an artistâs rendering of the Suicide Girls website â lots of garter belts and heaving cleavage. The sketches themselves lack substance, seeming more like a rip-off of genius comic book creator Paul Pope, combined with something youâd see on an Ed Hardy T-shirt â lots of inky, tattooish splashes.
